Systems Engineering Manager
Robotics
A senior leadership opportunity within a cross-functional engineering team, this role oversees system-level initiatives for current and future generations of complex robotic platforms. The individual will lead and grow two engineering groups focused on systems engineering and integration/testing. Responsibilities include defining and managing system architecture, developing analytical tools and simulations, guiding integration and verification processes, and ensuring high-performance system delivery. This position reports directly to a senior executive in hardware engineering.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and develop two engineering teams focused on systems engineering and integration/testing of advanced robotic technologies.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to prioritize projects, allocate resources, and ensure on-time delivery.
- Define and refine system architecture, driving cross-functional trade-offs and system optimization.
- Establish and manage system-level and subsystem-level requirements and performance metrics.
- Oversee modeling and simulation efforts, including kinematics, dynamics, calibration, and control systems.
- Build and maintain simulation and analysis tools to support product development and performance evaluation.
- Contribute technical insights and novel solutions to improve system capabilities, potentially incorporating areas such as computer vision or AI.
- Conduct risk assessments to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulatory expectations.
- Develop technical documentation for new designs and ongoing system improvements.
- Lead integration efforts for new prototypes and guide their evaluation and refinement.
- Design and manage system-level test plans, including the development of tools and fixtures.
- Collaborate closely with teams across mechanical, electrical, software, clinical, and product development domains.
- Promote robust verification and validation (V&V) practices across development phases.
- Coordinate with downstream teams (manufacturing, quality, operations) to ensure reliability and performance post-launch.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (robotics, electrical, or related field) and 8+ years of experience, or PhD with 6+ years of experience.
- Minimum 3 years in an engineering leadership role.
- Strong background in systems engineering and robotic system development.
- Demonstrated success in bringing complex hardware/software integrated products to market.
- Experience in regulated industries, particularly medical devices, is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with multidisciplinary project leadership involving mechanical, electrical, and software teams.
- Knowledge of relevant standards and regulations (e.g., ISO 13485, IEC 60601-1, ISO 14971) is a plus.
- Experience with computer vision technologies is advantageous.
Additional Information:
- Direct management responsibilities including hiring, mentoring, performance reviews, and career development.
- Full-time position; occasional extended hours and weekend work may be required.
- ~10% travel, including both in-state and out-of-state trips.
- Primary work location is a robotics and device manufacturing environment, which includes:
- Use of metrology and machining equipment, and occasional use of imaging systems.
- Extended periods of computer work.
- Ability to handle items up to 50 pounds.
- Exposure to moderate to loud operational noise levels.
