Freelance SAP Belgian Payroll Consultant
Project
One of Energize\'s clients is currently delivering a Belgian payroll transformation, focused on bringing more payroll calculations directly into SAP.
Currently, a number of gross-pay calculations and premiums are handled manually by payroll teams or calculated using data/reports from other systems before being uploaded into payroll. The objective is to bring more of this calculation logic directly into the SAP Payroll environment and payroll rule engine.
The programme is being delivered across three major waves. It is currently in Wave 2, primarily covering monthly premiums, with Wave 3 focusing on yearly premiums.
The project is already underway and working to challenging timelines, with requirements currently at different stages across refinement, development and testing. They therefore need an experienced consultant who can join an active programme and become productive quickly.
Location: Belgium / Hybrid-Remote
Start: ASAP
Utilisation: Minimum 50%, ideally higher
Duration: Initial project through end of 2026, with potential extension into 2027
Language: English required; Dutch and/or French advantageous
Contract: Freelance
The Role
The existing team already has strong SAP, HR and development expertise. The specific gap is somebody who combines deep Belgian payroll knowledge with hands-on SAP Payroll implementation capability.
You will take ownership of Belgian-specific payroll requirements and help take them from initial business requirement through to a working SAP solution.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Work directly with payroll and business stakeholders to understand and clarify Belgian-specific requirements.
- Analyse requirements relating to gross calculations, premiums and other Belgian payroll processes.
- Translate business requirements into clear, technically deliverable user stories.
- Challenge and refine existing requirements where necessary.
- Design the appropriate solution within SAP Payroll and its rule engine.
- Configure and personally deliver elements of the solution rather than operating solely in an advisory capacity.
- Support development/ABAP activities where required, either hands-on or in close collaboration with the existing development team.
- Support testing, troubleshooting and resolution of issues throughout implementation.
- Produce clear functional/technical documentation so solutions can subsequently be maintained or delivered by other members of the team.
- Join an existing fast-moving programme and operate independently with minimal hand-holding.
- Strong hands-on SAP HCM Payroll / SAP Payroll experience.
- Deep knowledge of Belgian payroll legislation and processes.
- Strong understanding of the Belgian SAP payroll calculation/rule engine.
- Practical implementation experience with Belgian-specific calculations, ideally including:
- Holiday pay/premiums.
- Monthly premiums.
- Annual/yearly premiums.
- Seniority-related premiums.
- Other Belgian-specific gross-pay calculations.
- Strong SAP Payroll configuration experience.
- Ability to translate payroll/business requirements into technical requirements and user stories.
- Comfortable taking ownership of requirements through to implementation.
- ABAP knowledge/capability would be highly beneficial.
- Experience working within large and complex organisations, ideally involving different employee populations such as white- and blue-collar workers.
- Strong documentation skills.
This is not purely a functional/business analyst position. The client needs somebody who understands Belgian payroll at a detailed level but is also sufficiently hands-on technically to deliver the resulting SAP solution.
Your Profile
The successful consultant should be:
- Highly independent and delivery-focused.
- Strong at extracting and clarifying requirements from payroll/business stakeholders.
- Comfortable joining a project that is already in progress.
- Able to quickly understand existing user stories and identify where they need improvement.
- Flexible in an environment where priorities can change quickly.
- Comfortable working to tight implementation timelines.
- Able to bridge the gap between Belgian payroll expertise and SAP technical delivery.
- Pragmatic and capable of taking a requirement from discussion through to working solution.
Working Arrangement
The requirement is for at least 50% availability, although higher availability would be preferred. The client wants somebody with sufficient capacity to focus properly on the project rather than balancing numerous simultaneous assignments. The position can be delivered largely remotely. Some onsite presence in Belgium would be advantageous, particularly during onboarding and requirements workshops, but there is currently no fixed weekly onsite requirement. There is an immediate backlog of work, so the preferred start is ASAP. The initial project scope runs through the end of 2026. However, further transformation activity is already expected beyond this, meaning there is potential for a longer-term engagement if the initial delivery is successful.
