Lead Perception Engineer
Robotics / Industrial Automation | Confidential search run by Energize RoboticsAbout the opportunity
Our client is a venture backed robotics company automating a physical, real world process that has not fundamentally changed in decades. They are moving fast from prototype to production and are already deploying their system in the field. This is a rare chance to build and own a perception stack from first principles, with direct exposure to hardware, real world data and a small, senior team that will grow around you.The role
We are looking for a highly skilled Lead Perception Engineer to lead a small team solving genuinely difficult robotic perception challenges using both classical and machine learning approaches. You will own the problem end to end, from evaluating the challenge and selecting sensors through to leading development and proving the solution works in the real world. What you will do
- Guide a team of engineers through the full development lifecycle, from initial concept and hardware selection through algorithm design, field deployment and maintenance.
- Integrate classical and machine learning image processing approaches for classification, depth sensing and 3D reconstruction.
- Select the optimal sensors, for example LiDAR, time of flight cameras or stereo vision, for each application.
- Build AI and machine learning models to improve object detection, classification and tracking.
- Apply deep learning techniques to improve system accuracy and efficiency.
- Run extensive testing, validation and calibration to ensure the system is accurate and reliable.
- Design and maintain high throughput perception pipelines with low latency and high reliability in real time environments.
- Take a hands on approach to identifying and resolving bottlenecks or failures in the perception stack, including hardware and software integration issues, and be willing to work on the shop floor or in the field to debug hardware in the loop failures.
- Set a high bar for code quality, architecture and documentation, and mentor junior engineers.
- Work closely with mechanical, systems, mechatronics, software and quality assurance engineers to keep solutions aligned with product goals.
What we are looking for
- Eight to ten years of professional software engineering experience in robotics, computer vision or a closely related field.
- At least two to three years in a formal or informal leadership capacity, such as a team lead, tech lead or mentor, with a track record of guiding technical projects and junior engineers.
- Strong foundation in robotics fundamentals, including coordinate transforms, sensor calibration, perception pipeline design and system architecture.
- Proven ability to perform hands on, low level debugging and systematic troubleshooting of complex robotic systems in real world environments.
- Expert level proficiency in Python, C++ and or Rust, with a focus on writing production grade, well tested code for autonomous systems.
- Demonstrated experience designing, implementing, testing and optimizing vision solutions for robotic or automation applications.
- Experience building machine learning pipelines and optimizing or productizing machine learning models.
- Proficiency in AI and machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch, and computer vision libraries such as OpenCV, PCL, Open3D or CUDA.
- Familiarity with depth sensing modalities such as LiDAR, stereo vision or time of flight, and sensor fusion.
- Excellent problem solving skills, attention to detail and comfort working in a dynamic environment.
Nice to have
- A master\'s or PhD in computer science, computer vision, machine learning or a related field.
- Experience developing within the ROS2 ecosystem.
